First the CD

 Ed Wilson had an idea…

The renowned veteran musician, bandleader and arranger – he of Daly Wilson Big Band fame - wanted to make another big band album. An album of his favourite swing arrangements that he’d written for vocalists. An album he wanted to call ‘Swing That Music’.

He approached Ralph Pyl, the leader of the acclaimed Sydney All Star Big Band, who was immediately keen to be involved.

For the vocals Ed’s choices were the sensational Emma Pask - one of the premier voices of Australian jazz, and Tom Burlinson, who had achieved astonishing success as a singer in his shows ‘Frank-A Life in Song’ and ‘Now We’re Swingin’!’ Both were thrilled and honoured to participate.

It was decided that the album would be a self-funded project. Ed, Emma, Tom and Ralph all invested in the work.

For the repertoire there was only one rule: every song had to be a “rip-snorter”; a “ball-tearer”; a “corker”- to use Ed’s terms!

The album was recorded at Trackdown Studios, Sydney in March 2017.

Engineered by Russell Finch. The mixing was done at Panic Productions Studio, which is owned by virtuoso trumpeter Paul Panichi. He had played on the recording and made a major contribution to the project by donating many hours of studio time as well as providing payment for the services again of Russell Finch, who mixed and co-produced with Ralph and Ed.

Then the live show!

 One idea led to another….

When the CD was completed it was realised by all involved that the product is of the highest quality.

Rather than simply release the CD into the market in the usual fashion, Tom Burlinson’s suggestion that a live show at a prestigious theatre would be another effective way to present the work to the public was met with much enthusiasm.

Almost 20 years earlier Tom had backed himself financially by producing his show in celebration of the music of Frank Sinatra ‘Frank-A Life in Song’. The success of that initial production had led to the creation of several other live shows that were performed in numerous venues all around the country. He now felt inspired to once again invest in a live show of ‘Swing That Music’.

Working in close collaboration with Tom on the production of the show is Dale Genner of Downunder Promotions who has been Tom’s Booking Agent and Tour Manager for the past several years

We secured a date of Saturday April 21 2018 at the State Theatre in Sydney for the World Premiere.

The show  contains most of the songs on the album with some special additions. Tom and Emma  sing individually and together, performing more duets than just the two on the CD. There is a couple of dynamic instrumental numbers from the band, with solo opportunities for the musicians throughout the evening. Champion dancers will also take to the stage at times, adding another interpretation of the Swing as well as some extra colour and movement!

So- the combination of wonderful songs, fine musicians, champion dancers and two great vocalists  make this an unforgettable experience.

‘Swing That Music’ is a very special exclusive night out and you’re invited!
